What to look for in high quality cheap floor lamps

When searching the internet for a cheap floor lamp, there are a number of factors to consider to make sure you get the best quality floor lamp for your budget. First of all, consider what your function your floor lamp will play in lighting your room. How much light do you need? Will this lamp be enough to light the whole space as desired? Do you want direct lighting, or would you prefer a softer, more diffuse light in your environment?

Consider also where you are going to place your floor lamp – are you looking for the convenience of a standard lamp that can be tucked away beside a piece of furniture such as a bookshelf or sofa, or do you want something with a little more panache that will create a centrepiece for the room, such as an anglepoise or arc floor lamp.

With these questions in mind you can begin to think about which kind of floor lamps best suit your environment. Once you’ve decided upon a lighting plan for your room, there are a few things relating to the type of floor lamp you buy that you should think about.

The most important of these is making sure your floor lamps will fit where they are supposed to – remember it is not only a question of height. An arc floor lamp can take up a good deal of space, and unless an angle floor lamp is given enough room to move, you may end up limiting the extra flexibility that a directional lamp provides. Take measurements of your apartment and refer to them when looking at different floor lamps. After all, a cheap torchiere floor lamp may look just right on paper, but if your ceiling is only a few inches above the shade, it won’t be such a good investment.

The next thing to take note of when buying cheap floor lamps is whether or not they have a large enough base. This is very important, as no matter how little a lamp costs, it will not be a good saving if you have to warn anyone coming into your room not to get too close, in case it falls over. Again its a question of figuring out how you use the space. Generally a large flat base is best for floor lamps – particularly if they are going to sit on an uneven surface such as a rug or carpet – as this reduces the likelihood of them falling over.

If a wide base is not possible – if you are choosing a cheap standard lamp for a corridor for instance – then make sure the base is heavy enough to counter-balance the weight of the lamp even if it is bumped into.

Another important point to consider in relation to space is the size of the lampshade you will use. A designer floor lamp with a bubble shade may look the epitome of style in the showroom, but will be less than practical in real terms if you have to duck past it every time you want to get into you living room.

Finally you should consider the overall build quality of any cheap floor lamps you are considering buying. A brushed chrome or aluminium finish on a lampshade can add a touch of contemporary style to a floor lamp without having to push the price up too dramatically, and even if it may cost a little more now the flexibility of an angle floor lamp may pay dividends in terms of future practicality.

Cheap Arco Floor Lamps: Arco Lamps for Every Budget

Arco Floor Lamp
The Arco floor lamp, originally designed by Achille Castiglioni in 1962, is a masterpiece of modern design, not only in its graceful curves and proportions, but also in its very philosophy. Castiglioni originally conceived of the Arco Lamp as a way of providing focussed illumination for tasks, without the need for the lamp to be in a fixed position, as it would have to be with a ceiling lamp. He succeeded beautifully, with a floor lamp that seamlessly mixes elegance and functionality, with looks that compliment any surroundings.

The only problem is an original Arco floor lamp is liable to set you back as much as £1500 ($2250) which isn’t cheap by anybody’s measure. Not to worry though, as CheapFloorLamps.co.uk have scoured the internet to find you some alternative floor lamps that save on the expesnse without without scrimping on that all important Arco lamp style.

Arco Floor Lamp@Conran Shop
The original Arco floor lamp, is available from The Conran Shop and features a reflector made from spun aluminium, but as you can see will set you back £1430. If that’s a little too rich for your blood, then this rather less expensive version is available for just £200!
Black Arco Floor Lamp
As you can see, this excellent replica of the Arco Lamp closely resembles the 1962 original, with the only major differences being that the arched stem of the lamp and the domed lampshade are made from brushed chrome instead of the aluminium of the original and the white base is here rendered in black marble. This floor lamp, though cheaper by far than the Conran Shop edition nevertheless retains the stylish lines of the Arco Lamp, with its modern feel and contemporary design. This Arco-style floor lamp is available with a white marble base from Furniture 123 and costs just £260 – that’s a saving of nearly £1200 pounds off the price of the original!

If that’s still a little more than you were hoping to spend an Arco lamp, then don’t panic, we’ve also found a great cheap arc floor lamp that still carries some of the panache of the original Arco, while not making such a big dent on your wallet:
Cheap Arc Floor Lamp
This floor lamp, while not really an Arco in the truest sense of the word still manages to look stylish and elegant. In fact the only difference which is immediately apparent is the round flat base, but since in many cases an arc floor lamp will be placed at the edge of a room or next to a sofa, this will not really be that visible, while the flatter base more easily sits on carpet than the upright version will, making this floor lamp ideal for lighting modern apartments. This arc floor lamp features an adjustable head, and retails for only £100 at Dooleys Furniture.

Cheap Floor Lamps: A Basic Style Guide

Floor lamps are a great way to light your home in a modern and stylish way. A good floor lamp can be used to light a room without the need for harsh ceiling lights that detract attention from the room itself, and depending on which type of floor lamp you buy you can perform any function be it lighting a specific area or task, presenting an aspect of design, or simply creating a warmer feeling for your guests.

Deciding which kind of floor lamp you need for your home doesn’t have to be a challenge or place too much demand on your time. Indeed it should be a treat, exploring which of the many styles of floor lamp available, and with a little help courtesy of our website, you should be able to find a stylish designer floor lamp that will just look superb, whether you live in a small apartment or a castle! And they needn’t cost the earth – our guide will help you find the cheapest and best floor lamps available on-line.

Here at CheapFloorLamps.com we’ve put together a style guide to help you find right kind of floor lamp for your needs and tastes. There are two main considerations that will affect which type of floor lamp you settle for – functionality and design. There are several types of floor lamp available to buy, the traditional ’standard’ lamp which projects the light down on the floor, maybe to draw attention to a particular part of your living space, and the more decorative style, or ‘torchiere’ lamps which point the light upwards, to give the room a richer, more diffuse light.

Lets start with a few basic types of standard lamps such as this:
Functional stand-up floor lamp
This type of floor lamp represents the ultimate in functionality – a sturdy lamp with a long stem and a large shade which will light the surrounding area well, and fit into any surroundings well due to its contemporary style, and neutral finish. This kind of floor lamp represents great value for money as it will last a long time and by changing the lampshade, it will not look out of place in most kinds of environment. Most of all it will provide great lighting for any room.

The second main type of floor lamp is the inverted torchiere lamp, an example of which can be seen below:
Torchiere Floor Lamp
Torchiere floor lamps differ from standard lamps in that they project their light upwards towards the ceiling, creating a glow that gives a warmer feeling to a space than that given by the sharp light of a standard lamp. They can be excellent at diffusing light around a space, or lighting a particular feature of your place, such as pictures or photographs on a wall. As the light given off will not be visible directly by people in the room, a torchiere floor lamp can also be fitted with different color bulbs to create a different mood for a special occasion, or with high wattage bulbs, that would be overpowering if visible to the naked eye.

A third type of floor lamp is the directional or Anglepoise Lamp like this one:

A directional floor lamp is not only a must if you need to perform specific tasks in the light, such as reading or painting, but is also a good piece of modern design that will still fit nicely into any living room or study. Placed by a desk a directional-head floor lamp can help keep you focussed when letter writing for example, and sat next to a settee or a bed an Anglepoise lamp allows you to curl up and read without disturbing others in the room.
